Trying to pre-empt Photokina, Nikon has today announced a range of digitial cameras to the UK press. Models include the Nikon Coolpix 4800, the Nikon Coolpix 8400 wide, the Nikon Coolpix 8800 and D2X.

The Coolpix 4800 is a 4 megapixel compact digital camera with an 8.3x optical Zoom-Nikkor ED glass lens that is the equivalent of a 36-300mm lens in 35mm photography

Other features include a 13.5 internal memory, SD card support and rechargeable Li-ion battery. Nikon also boast that the 4800 can capture 8 images at up to 1.5 fps. The Coolpix 4800 will be available from November 2004.

The Nikon Coolpix 8400 will offer 8.0 effective megapixels with a wide angle 24-85mm (35mm equivalent) zoom capability, fast AF and a host of other features. It is also the first camera in the Coolpix range to offer TTL flash capability when used with external SB-800 and SB-600 Speedlights.

Meanwhile the Nikon Coolpix 8800 is also an 8-megapixel model, but comes with a 10x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens with a Vibration Reduction (VR) System — again another first for the Coolpix range. The Coolpix 8800 will be available next month.

Topping the bill is the D2X. A Digital SLR model that will offer 12.4 megapixels and followis in the footsteps of the D2H. The D2X will be available in January next year.
