YouTube to launch trial with Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless Vcast customers to get access to certain YouTube videos

NEWS: 28 November 2006 15:57 GMT by Amber Maitland

YouTube is set to invade the mobile space as well as the online world thanks to a deal with with Verizon Wireless in the US.

Verizon customers who subscribe to the Vcast service will have direct access to YouTube in a new trial to launch in December.

Not only will they be able to view video, but they'll also be able to post their own content more easily.

Instead of having to login with an email address, they'll simply type in a five digit code in order to upload content

However, there's a twist to the YouTube mobile version, in that Vcast users, who pay $15 a month to watch video on their mobiles, will only receive videos approved by YouTube.

This new trial is a part of a push by YouTube to expand its appeal even further and monetise its site, which was purchased by Google for around $1.65 billion earlier this month. YouTube does not currently have any tie-ins with mobile service providers.
