No red herrings here: only the real McCoy from these resident boffins about the origin of some of the phrases we use everyday and how they’ve entered the lexicon of the modern English language.

Did you know that “round the bend” comes from the time when stately homes had straight driveways whereas a asylums had curved ones? Hence, somebody literally went round the bend.

Well, it kept me occupied anyway…
