Sony BMG settles charges in CD copy-protection suit

Some CDs allegedly damaged PCs

NEWS: 1 February 2007 12:25 GMT by Amber Maitland

Sony BMG has agreed to settle charges relating to its case claiming that the copy-protection on some of its CDs was damaging to PC.

The settlement sees Sony having to make disclosure, lets customers exchange the affected CDs and pay each person affected up to $150 to repair their PCs.

This is the end of a long-running battle to hold Sony accountable for the damage.

In November 2005, Sony was accused of using similar techniques to virus writers in its copy protection, which hid itself on the computer.

Only CDs sold in the US contained this particular type of copy protection.
