Oscar stars choose green cars over Limos

Toyota Prius and Telsa Roadster cars of choice

NEWS: 25 February 2007 15:18 GMT by Stuart Miles

They've banned the gadget-laden goodie bags, mobile phones and digital cameras, but that isn't stopping Hollywood stars showing their green credentials when they turn up to the glitzy Oscars tonight.

Instead of stretch limos or Hummers, many of them will be arriving in eco-friendly hybrids, electric sports cars and other green vehicles.

Some of the world’s biggest celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio and Penelope Cruz, have said that they will be choosing to arrive at the Academy Awards in "green cars" like the Toyota Prius and the Tesla Roadster.

Global Green USA, which is the US affiliate of Mikhail Gorbachev's Green Cross International says it has lined up 30 cars to ferry such stars as Forest Whittaker, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Gwyneth Paltrow to the February 25 Academy Awards ceremony.

It is the biggest push yet for the advocacy group's annual "Red Carpet/Green Cars" Oscar campaign, which provides fuel-efficient vehicles for celebrities attending the event said the company in a statement on its website.

"Global warming is threatening us all", said Oscar nominee and Global Green supporter Penelope Cruz. "Fortunately, there are many simple things we can all do such as driving greener cars or changing to compact fluorescent light bulbs, which can dramatically save energy and reduce global warming pollution."

Of course they could always catch the ceremony on their mobile phone, oh no, wait they've been banned to.
