Sony promises no more PS3 shortages by May Says production will catch up with demand

Sony's shortages of PS3s is expected by its top executives to end by May.

Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, has also said that reports of PS3s staying on store shelves means that Sony are producing enough to keep up with demand, and not that it's not selling as well as expected.

"It's a testament to the fact that we've been able to manufacture and ship units on a greater pace than any previous console", he said.

"Our coal is to fill shelves across the United States. Our goal is not to have empty shelves, it's to have full shelves", Tretton told Reuters.

He also said that Sony plans to ship 2 million of the consoles by the end of March, while the company's target is to produce 6 million worldwide.

The latest research figures show that PS3 sales are lagging behind those of the Xbox 360 and Wii. Sony sold 244,000 PS3s, while Microsoft flogged 294,000 Xbox 360s and Nintendo a whopping 436,000 Wiis.
