You may have heard the heart-warming story of the two young children on holiday in Scotland who were rescued by a lifeboat last week. Heart-warming because there was a happy ending: their inflatable was caught by a vicious tide and the lifeboat was scrambled to come and save them. All too often it's not the case. The RNLI however, do their damndest, every day, to keep those happy endings coming. You don't often hear about them, it's true, but they are happening. Every day.

On this site you can learn everything you need to know about this extraordinary organisation. You can even see where the crews are in action as the site is linked to individuals' pagers all around the coast.

Most importantly, you can donate online or get ideas for fundraising. Many people forget, or don't even realise, that the RNLI are volunteers. It's a charity. And its running costs average over £330,000 a day. That's every single day.

So, this summer, as you enjoy the predicted fine weather around Britain's glorious coastline, spare a thought for the small band of dedicated volunteers who keep our waters safe.

And if you can spare a thought, perhaps you can spare some change too - you never know when you might be needing their help.
