25% smaller plus a host of other features

NEWS: 9 May 2007 2:05 GMT by Stuart Miles

Sony Ericsson has updated it P-Series of smartphones with the launch of the P1.

The new pocket sized handset promises to be 25% smaller than the company's P990 offering and sports 3G, Wi-Fi and VoIP connectivity alongside a Qwerty keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera with business card scanner, media player, FM radio and 512MB Memory Stick Micro.

“In one sense the Sony Ericsson P1 is an evolution of our P-series smartphones, as it pushes forward the best attributes of its predecessors”, says Steve Walker, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson. “At the same time there are also significant improvements in design, speed and battery performance.”

The P1, looking to complete against the BlackBerry and other PDA styled devices also supports a wide range of push email solutions and Web browsing applications including AlteXia, Ericsson Mobile Office, Intellisync, Microsoft - Exchange ActiveSync, BlackBerry Connect, Seven, Sybase/iAnywhere and Visto.

The new handset will run the Symbian OS v9.1 operating system and measure 106 x 55 x 17mm. It will weigh 124 grams, be available in Silver Black and come with a 2.6-inch 262k colour TFT touchscreen with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution.

According to Sony Ericsson the P1 offers a talk time of up to 10 hrs/3 hrs 30 min for GMS or 3G and a standby time of up to 440 hrs/350 hrs respectively. Sony Ericsson is also boasting a video call time of up to 2 hrs.

The Sony Ericsson P1 is a Tri-Band GPRS 900/1800/1900 and UMTS 2100 handset with Wi-Fi 802.11b.
