LG.Philips LCD announces flexible A4 colour E-paper

14 May 2007 13:14 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

South Korean company LG.Philips LCD has announced today that it has developed the world’s first 14.1-inch flexible colour E-paper display, the same size as an A4 sheet of paper. This is a second breakthrough in E-paper for LG.Philips LCD, which introduced the world’s first 14.1-inch black and white display this time last year.

The 14.1-inch flexible colour E-paper uses electronic ink from E-Ink Corp to produce a maximum of 4096 colours. It can be viewed from a full 180 degrees, so that images always appear crisp, even when the display is bent.

These displays are extremely energy efficient, only using power when the image changes. Additionally the displays are extremely thin. The images displayed are comparable in quality to printed pages.

"LG.Philips LCD is the first company to develop a flexible colour E-paper display of this size", said Mr. In-Jae Chung, the company’s chief technology officer and executive vice president. "The potential applications for this display are incredible and will allow our customers to create new products that are not only convenient to use but also save natural resources. This represents the next generation in display technology."
