Wi-Fi Alliance announce start of Draft n product certification

And get a shiny new logo

NEWS: 16 May 2007 15:16 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

The Wi-Fi Alliance (sounds like something from Star Wars, sadly just the industry association to promote WLANs) has announced that it will start to certify 802.11n Draft 2.0 products with a smart new logo (pictured) from June this year.

The official standards and specifications for 802.11n won't be finalised and published until early 2009, but the Wi-Fi Alliance has been forced to bow to industry (and consumer) pressure to begin looking at Draft n product lines now.

Products bearing the new logo will have to be prove their "interoperability" and compatibility with both existing 802.11a/b/g and other Draft n equipment.

While the average consumer may believe that this news doesn't mean a whole lot to them, it is actually pretty exciting if you're into your tech in a networked-home kinda way.

Draft n standard Wi-Fi has the (possible) potential to deliver up to five times the throughput and up to twice the range of previous-generation Wi-Fi gear.

In theory, you can look forward to speedier file transfers, high def video streaming, whole-home Wi-Fi coverage and faster online gaming, in fact, 802.11n Draft 2.0 is the absolute best technology available for you to truly get the most out of your Wi-Fi-enabled computing, communication and entertainment devices.

The future is now, and all that.
