Wibree is to become industry standard Ultra low power wireless tech gets official backing

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the association responsible for advancing Bluetooth wireless technology, joined Nokia today in announcing that the Wibree forum, the group specifying the Nokia developed ultra low power wireless technology, will be merged with the Bluetooth SIG.

What this means is that Nokia's Wibree technology, an ultra low power, low range Bluetooth-type technology has been given official recognition by the relevant body.

Wibree will have applications in medical fields, for sports equipment and well-being gadgets.

Wibree consumes only a fraction of the power of classic Bluetooth radios. In many cases it makes it possible to operate these devices for more than a year without recharging and will provide wireless connectivity for smaller devices.

The ultra low power innovation will allow watches and toys, as well as sports and wellness, healthcare and entertainment devices to be easily connected to your other devices, for example, a pedometer to your watch.
