Asda will be the first UK supermarket to stock a new range of "environmentally friendly" CDs.

The new range gives customers the option of buying over 80,000 best selling CDs in fully compostable packaging.

The new "Ecopac" range is manufactured by Universal Music and made from 100% recycled, and recyclable, paper-foam and will be available in all Asda stores this week.

The green iniative debuted in Wal-Mart stores in the States six months ago and has seen sales of more than two million copies to date.

The new packaging is available on 42 titles ranging from Marilyn Manson to Marvin Gaye and can be recycled along with newspapers and magazines.

To up the green credentials even further, no booklets will are included in the packaging - instead these can be downloaded directly from the Universal Music website.

The move follows suprising Asda research which apparently suggests that up to 25% of all plastic music CD covers are thrown away within a year of purchase.
