Chinese couple baby wanted to call their baby "@"

16 August 2007 13:50 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Reuters reports that a Chinese couple tried to name their baby "@".

"The whole world uses it to write e-mail, and translated into Chinese it means 'love him'", the father explained.

Like the now abolished French system, China forces parents to name their children with traditional language names in an attempt to stop the Anglicisation of the language.

Earlier this year the government announced a ban on names using numerals, foreign languages and symbols that do not belong to Chinese minority languages.

It is not reported whether or not the name was allowed.
