Facebook, Bebo campaign sees return of Cadbury's Wispa

80s choc bar gets brought back after online pressure

NEWS: 21 August 2007 7:44 GMT by Amy-Mae Elliott

A campaign on social networking sites Bebo, Facebook and MySpace has forced Cadbury to reinstate the Wispa bar.

The Wispa, first launched in 1981, will return to shop shelves on October 7th, when Cadbury will relaunch 23 million bars to the UK market.

The chocolate bar, discontinued in 2003, was the subject of an online campaign from thousands of consumers.

The chocolate-lovers lobbied Cadbury on MySpace and Facebook, which saw a 14,000-strong "Bring Back Wispa" group.

Cadbury has said the reintroduction is for a limited time, but if sales figures are good, it could see a permanent return.

Tony Bilsborough, Cadbury spokeperson, said: "We have noticed the web interest for some time and the consumer passion has undeniably swayed our opinion to relaunch Wispa".

"This is the first time that the power of the Internet played such an intrinsic role in the return of a Cadbury brand."

Good work, social networkers. Now let's see what you can do about the Spira, eh?
