Review: Jonathan Goddard’s review of the 2007 Honda CR-V appears to be based on personal opinion rather than objective comparison.

The new CR-V’s looks may be an acquired taste, but the reviewer should be cautious: remember the initial reception of Bangle’s seven series? Now BMW are selling hand over fist based on his designs and the public have embraced them.

More worryingly, the review implies that fuel consumption and performance are poorer on the new model than the outgoing. In fact, all variants of the 2007 model improve. Particularly so the auto 2.0 petrol preferred by the reviewer – 30.4 mpg improves to 34.4 mpg; 13.1 seconds 0-60 mph improves to 12.2 seconds. Sentiment, rather than fact, appears to be the basis for this review.

The new model has some important improvements over the old. Not least of which is the interior placement of the spare wheel. For some reason, the reviewer would like to shift 30 kg of wheel each time they want to access the boot. Personally, I prefer something that is infrequently accessed (how often do you get a puncture?) to be stowed out of the way.

I would not have bought any previous generation CR-V, despite being a Honda fan. Having driven them I was impressed (particularly when the diesel joined the line-up). However, the interior finish was just too rough and ready for me. The new model is a vast improvement. So much so, that my 3 year old diesel Accord Tourer is about to be replaced by a diesel CR-V. The list of improvements on the new CR-V is extensive, but includes: Sat Nav upgrade (MP3 plays from a memory card), reversing camera, proper trip computer and vastly improved cruise control switches on the steering wheel.

To answer the question posed in the review headline: yes, the latest CR-V 2007 is absolutely an improvement over the previous generations.
Pros: Car-like handling, sliding rear seats, high spec level (sat nav, leather & climate on the EX)
Cons: No seventh row, but following fashion is not necessarily a good thing.
