20 March 2008 - If you’re the type of person who is impressed by designer labels, you’ll love this external hard drive as it oozes style. The black glossy finish is more in keeping with the digital home than the average living room or computer desk.

However, it’s small footprint means it won’t take up too much space, while the blue LED lights that shine from underneath enhance the chic look.

With 500GB of storage space on offer and only a USB 2.0 port to connect to your PC, you’ll soon have this device up and running. To make things even easier, when you first install it, an automatic wizard boots into action to help you format the drive for your particular machine.

Small it may be but you won’t be able to take it on the road with your notebook, as it needs a mains power connection to run.

While primarily designed for Windows machines, LaCie haven’t missed any tricks, as you can set a portion of the disk to work with either Linux or Mac OS X machines.

However, the most impressive part of the installed software is the proprietary 1-Click that allows you to backup your PCs hard drive with easy. It’s a quick and fast tool and worth setting us as soon as you install the device.

VERDICT
Considering LaCie is making a big thing of the designer, this isn’t the most overtly designed product, the Seagate FreeAgent certainly gives it a run for its money.

What the Neil Poulton LaCie Hard Disk does offer is a compact design at a great price with some worthy software installed and in the end, what more can you ask for?
