Review: I have owned the HD-E1 for two weeks now. That fact that it does not support 1080p was one I considered but felt was not an issue in my case as many HD ready TV's like my own only support up to 1080i or 720p anyway.

I personaly play my HD DVD's through a Panasonic 42Px60B Plasma which does a fine job with the new hi-definition pictures. Noticeably blacks are crisper and the detail within dark films is extremely clear and defined. In particular I found films like The Chronicles of Riddick to have the wow factor that one would hope to get from a state of the art machine like the Toshiba.

The sound quality decoded via the Toshiba is also very good. It seems clearer and more precise than that of my Sony SD DVD player.

The bad bits I feel are minor issues.

I have had a couple of lockups which meant I had to remove the plug from the power source and re-insert it to reset the machine. I'm sure the next software update will rectify this problem and besides its only happened a couple of times.

I also found the tray a bit noisy and clunky sounding when opening. Again, merely a minor point.

Overall I am very happy with the product. It would have been easy to wait 6 months until the second or third generation comes out but I like the best now and this is without doubt the best your films will look for some time to come and the prices will only become cheaper as the next few months go by.
Pros: Excellent picture & sound quality.

See films again like you never saw them on SD.
Cons: Occasional lockups & clunky disc tray.
Score: 8/10
