Review: Don't listen to Pocket-lint's review of this wonderful game. The reviewer obviously hasn’t played or given the game enough to time in order to see its full glory. Firstly, lets get one thing clear… you can quit the game and return to the main menu by pressing L1, R1, Select and Start together but why that was picked up instead of the other great stuff this game has to offer I don't know.
The game is an instant pick up and play classic. Choose your course and character and away you go on to the lovely and very detailed golf courses. Game play is simple if you want it to be but put some thought into it and you’ll be golfing like a pro. Judging the ball lie, taking into fact the weather, which way is the wind blowing, is the rain going to slow the ball down, whether you need to add spin on the ball, choosing the right club and lastly deciding how far to hit the ball, either with the traditional method or the new advanced swing option. Yes you do have to go though a LOT of games in order to unlock things like extra clubs, balls, courses and characters, but why not when the game offers so much while being fun at the same time.
Shockingly the Pocket-lint review forgets to mention the games fantastic online play. 50 player online tournaments, with people from all over the world are the most fun I've had on the PS3 so far. It offers a huge challenge for those people (myself included) that think their great players based on the single player games. I have been an avid follower of this title since its PlayStation One days and, must say, thought of myself as quite a golfer. How wrong was I when the PS3 version opened up game play online so brilliantly? People getting birdies on every hole, bringing up eagles when you’re struggling to find par and hole in one’s looking like a thing people do for fun.
Playing online couldn’t be simpler. You can book tournaments well in advance and also take part in smaller 2-8 player tournaments. There is an excellent lobby where you can chat with others with your created character (sadly you can’t use this character within the game, just for chatting within the lobby), which can be dressed up with numerous numbers of costumes that are unlocked as you progress through the game (for example, you get a witches outfit if you manage to get a hole in one).
All in all this game is wonderful, it has so much to offer and you’ll be playing for years to come. Don’t let this game slip you by, forget Tiger Woods (*yawn*), this is where golfing is most fun!
Pros: Simple pick up and play fun.
Has lots to offer.
Online is fantastic.
Did I mention that it's fun?!
Cons: Not any that I can think of...
Score: 9/10
