Review: I bought a Mac Firewire unit to replace failed AIT tape drive. Works well and very fast with Retrospect 6 (not bundled, though Restrospect Express is). Around 15 minutes to back up 15GB (over a network). The only problem so far is that there seems to be no hardware compression, so I’m only getting 35GB capacity instead of 70-90 possible. To be fair, I have not spent that long trying and it may well be achievable. All in all quite a good, fast unit for medium size back-ups. Will be much better when higher capacity media is available and with hardware compression. Would also be a good unit for transporting data between home and office, etc.

Review: Iomega should stop its REV product advertisement from exaggerating its 35G/90G compression because these advertisements are dishonestly misleading customers about the dollar saving on disk space. The compression is not a hardware compression. And the poor performance of the software compression makes itself not having any commercial value. It takes more than 10 hours to backup 30 GBytes of data. The algorithm is still in its infancy and should stay in school laboratories. Apparently the software does not have catalog management to hasten the speed of retrieving and displaying the restorable file list (e.g., over 100,000 files) from a compressed backup REV disk set. The result is that it takes a couple of hours to show the file list so that I can select and restore a single file. Pathetic!! I've already given up using Iomega Automatic Backup Pro. The software is virtually useless when the compression setting is high. This means you'll never have any disk space dollar value saving as advertised by Iomega. Cheers, A very disappointed customer.
