Review: Our office has two Olympus DS 4000 recorders. They have both broken within the first 6 months of use. I like the form and design, but what good is it if the devise is so fragile that it no longer works after only modest use. One of the recorders has a broken "new file" switch. The other recorder's connector to the base station was defunct after only about 40 hours of use. The latter problem render the devise inoperable.
Pros: Only a few Digital recorders have the slide bar. This is a terrific feature.
Cons: Very Fragile and broken soon. The advertisement states that it is durable. That's at laugh. There is no one at Olympus to complain to. We sent our first broke recorder to Olympus USA for repair. It was returned about a month later. ( It works will so far). They said we would get it back in 7 to 10 business days.

Review: I have been using the DS 4000 for 5 months now. It used to work perfectly - up to now. Two days ago the slide button broke. There is a tiny metal pin that has to transfer the outside movement of the sliding button inside. It looks so fragile, that I am worried, that even after a successful repair it may break every 4 to 5 months. I called Olympus Germany and asked for a replacement. They told me that no such service exists, I have to wait for my DS 4000 to be repaired, which takes on average 10 working days, or so they said. I am glad I have my Grundig 4015 replacement which unfortunately is not directly compatible with my Mac. With a little detour through my windows notebook, however, I can at least then transfer my data to my Mac and open the files with the Olympus software. Olympus charges top prices - what for? Mediocre engineering and a rotten service? Or is it just me who’s had these problems?
