Review: I purchased a TomTom for Xmas and so far I’m delighted with it. I had one problem where a bit of dirt got between the lip of the casing and the touch screen and kept turning the volume down. A quick scrape along the gap with a bit of paper and no further problems (Moral - don't throw it into the bottom of your case with all the crud - look after it a bit!) Other than that it has been a real life-saver - I haven't got lost for three months now. Sure it can take a couple of minutes to lock on if you are in a built up area, and the display is hard to see in REALLY bright sunshine (so use the external aerial and mount it out of the glare), but other than that it's brilliant. You'd have to prize it from my cold dead hands to separate us! The problem with any navigator is that it is never going to be a substitute for local knowledge. You are always going to know better than it, that School hill gets blocked with Chelsea tractors picking up the kids between 3:15 and 4:00pm. But if you have to get to “dunromin”, at the other end of the country, it'll get you there better than any map could ever do. I know you were reviewing a different model, but your experience does seem to be the odd one out.

Review: I purchased the TomTom 300 in July and for about a month it was great. I then developed a fault with the SD card and went back to Halfords where I bought it. They said that I should contact the help line by phone which was easier said than done. It took about an hour to get through. After trying several things it was decided that I needed a new SD card. I then had to download a label from their website and return the SD card via UPS. In the meantime I had to manage without the equipment. UPS didn't turn up to collect it on 2 occasions but eventually it was taken away. The website was also down for a few days and I could not get a reply to my emailed questions. The product appears to be very good but if you get a problem you don't get much help.

Review: I’ve travelled twice now to Portugal with the Tom Tom and I think it’s a great piece of kit. No maps to read, no stress, nothing, the only thing is the sunlight.

Review: The application has a great feel but it is flaky and does not always work right. However, no piece of electronics works right all of the time, so I can deal with that. The only real PROBLEM I have is the map data that TomTom uses (supplied by TeleAtlas) is not very good. Many of the road pieces have incorrect information, and too often the unit will tell me it knows where an address is but takes me somewhere 20-30km away from the actual address and I have to stop and ask someone local for directions.

Review: TomTom is a superb piece of kit - I am using it with an HP IPAQ 1710 – but I can’t work out how to add favourites via the GPS location so that the device retains this the next time you switch the unit back on!!

Review: I sell double glazing and travel to homes in East Anglia. Tom Tom relieves much of the stress in reading maps, and helps me out of housing estates too!!!

Review: I have used the Tom Tom Go for three months and find it excellent. I have fitted a non-reflective screen protector and use a plastic probe to tap the screen with. Result greatly reduced reflections and no dirty prints. The unit worked very well on a recent trip to the Continent using only the provided Major roads of Europe. There are many POI's (points of interest) available on the internet that can be easily added. This can be done from the comfort of your home. The mapping has errors, but don't all maps. All in all the Go is a great piece of kit.

Review: If the users of TomTomGo want to keep their screens clean why not use a pencil with a rubber on the end, very high tech but it works wonders. The screen reflection is the only thing I have to complain about.
Posted: 19 August 2004

From: J Hill
Location: Bristol, UK
Review: I have had TomTom go for 6 weeks and have driven 6000 miles to different locations all over the country and it has not let me down once. It is a superb bit of kit and I would recommend it. It takes the stress out of driving.

Review: My first foray into Sat Nav and am generally well impressed. I like the 3D map, 'time to destination' and quick re-route when taking a 'wrong' turning.
PROS:
*Clear instructions both with the manual (hardly! - leaflet) and with the voices.
*Intuitive on screen icons etc.
CONS:
*The screen gets dirty and is difficult to see in strong sunlight.
*It can sometimes take a few minutes to locate the satellites when first switched on.
*The in car power lead sometimes doesn't fully connect into the rear of the TomTom.
*I don't like the phrase 'cross the roundabout' when you're then taking the first exit - 'enter roundabout' would be a better alternative.

Review: I use my TomTom Go to assist in locating addresses to pick up holidaymakers to take them to the main tour coach. I have lived in this locality for a few years now, but was most impressed with the new ways in which the navigator took me to find my passengers! I was disappointed that I could not put a complete journey into the memory, but found a way around this shortcoming by logging each pickup as a "favourite". I then travel from home - favourite 1, GPS - favourite 2 etc. I retain the favourites for the return journey as well because this travels the opposite way around the route, and so far has worked perfectly. Winges: (1) The screen soon gets very dirty with finger marks, I have put the protective plastic cover back on that it was supplied with, and had no more trouble! (2)I am not allowed to use the voice prompts when the other half travels with me, a pity it is not Blue Tooth enabled. (3)I often pick people up at a bus or railway station, neither are listed as POI, it is a pain trying to locate them to put in as a "Favourite". (4) I suspect that some parts of the map are well out of date! Ipswich has a one way system which was reversed 15 months ago, and private vehicles prohibited from using certain streets on its route. TomTom happily directed me into this system, no doubt a stranger would have fallen for it and perhaps received a ticket! To try and input all that into the map error page is going to prove a bit difficult! Also it directed me to "Turn Left and then Right" to travel straight on over one of these double roundabout systems. I just take a mental image of the graphic picture at the bottom of the screen for complicated roundabouts!
