Review: With high street stores pushing back expected release dates, the news that the European launch of the Sony PSP has been delayed, again, until September 1st, is no great surprise. While a painful announcement for some, at least it puts an end to the longing and makes the trip overseas or at least to an importer's website, worthwhile. The internet, normally a source of all things subversive, discounted and in demand, is fraught with peril for the PSP hunter. Google is littered with suspicious campaigns, referrers and affiliates. eBay, a better option, has some genuine looking offerings but there is always the worry that you'll be hit with an import tax bill, or worse, a non delivery, plus, with rumours of pixel failures, who wants to buy from an unregistered eBayer? Following a top tip from a PSP owner, with a recommended link in hand, I placed an order online for my PSP pack. Despite the shaky looking HTML, the payments are handled by Worldpay and there are landline contact numbers to call in case of problems. While the cost is more than expected, a UK shopper can snap up a PSP, case, UK power pack, USB charging cable, 32 MB card and a top class game. By purchasing a Japanese PSP, the world games market is wide open. The menus on screen are in English, as is the manual. The DVD region is 2, so fine for UK use. 48 hours later, the bundle is expected by Special Delivery. Sure, it costs more than the projected UK price, but the product should arrive in mint condition, from the UK. Wait until September to play Ridge Racer? Why bother? A good example of a world wide product in massive demand and a worldwide economy of grey importers who make an honest living satisfying customers. I’ll be back to include a review of the service and of the PSP itself.
